Phone Scam / Fraud Alert
We are continuously receiving reports of "scammers" attempting to defraud citizens by posing as Elmore County Sheriff's Office employees and asking for a monetary payment over the telephone. (They may also pretend to be from another law enforcement agency.) The perpetrators will often use the names of actual Sheriff's Office personnel during the phone call. Frequently the caller will spoof the Sheriff's Office phone number, and it will look legitimate.
This scam has used many variations throughout the years. The most recent involves the offender(s) obtaining an inmate's name from our jail roster that is posted on our website and contacting the family of the inmate. The premise is to get the family to send said offender money to make a bond, add money to their commissary account, etc. Victims have also received calls claiming that they had a warrant for their arrest, that they missed Grand Jury, or they missed a court date, and they must submit payment to the caller to avoid being arrested.
The Elmore County Sheriff's Office will never call a citizen and ask for money. If you receive a call similar to what is described above, it is a scam. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with our Agency and are unsure if it's legitimate, please hang up and call us at 334-567-5546.
